I had a week with no plans ahead of me, so I decided to walk to my grandparents'. It's about 150km (about 93 miles) and I figured I could make it in four days.
The main idea was to just get away from busy civilization for a while and spend some good time with God. The problem was that I didn't bother to consult this idea of mine with the same God. But I realized that only afterwards.
My lesson number one was of an utterly different kind: don't underestimate your footwear! I glued my old shoes the night before setting off and thought they would last...not even the first day! I made it to a town where one shoe store was still open and unwillingly bought a pair of ugly rubber shoes. The next morning I decided to walk on even in those cosmic-looking beach slippers but I guess there weren't made for backpacking since every step soon became a very unpleasant experience.
Body made it till night but that was it. I had to swallow my pride and admit this was over.
On the train, taking me the rest of the way, I learned my lesson number two: because God respects my freedom, He'll let me do things like this if I want to, they just might turn out to be very meaningless.
I guess it wasn't completely without meaning after all, I learned something about the freedom of will and how life on my own might sound great but be unfulfilled in the end.
